Wines that Rock: Merlot - Long live the Queen

Fuck Paul Giamatti Sideways! If ever there has been a moment so undeserved in wine culture, it is that one line recited to me over and over again from that movie “I am not drinking any fucking Merlot.” In case you were unaware, that one line caused sales of Merlot to flat line for years and Merlot has gone from one of the biggest red wines to one of the least liked even though it is still the second most popular red variety in the USA after Cabernet Sauvignon.  As a result, our generation has missed out on a damn good wine!

Fuck Paul Giamatti Sideways!

So now we are taking back Merlot, and celebrating it for what it is, the Queen of Wine.

Combined with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot forms the important counter part in Bordeaux blends. It is the Queen of hearts to Cab-Sav’s King of Diamonds, adding a soft elegance to the mix, making it more subtle, more rounded. As wine makers have chased that legendary Bordeaux blend style, Merlot has become the New Age Queen of wine, like Beyonce and Jay-Z.

On its own, Merlot is full on Beyonce! Anybody with a working set of ears falls head over heels any time they (still) hear Crazy in Love, Baby Boy, or Single Ladies. At the same time it carries enough presence with its body, and boy does Merlot have a body, to dominate a Super Bowl with an immense performance. Who even remembers the game? Everybody remembers the Beyonce performance. Merlot is soft, supple, can please everybody and yet is so powerful as to create a movement, embolden people, and get everybody on the dance floor.

And that is why Merlot is powerful, it may be smooth, catchy, enjoyable to everyone, but like the Queen herself Merlot can be loved by everyone. A friend remarked to me that he started drinking Merlot because it reminded him of his dad because of his love for the wine. It brought back good memories.

Merlot is one of those wines that you connect with because of your life, your experiences, your sad days, your happy days, your memories, and your future. Its all there.

The velvet body, lush fruits, chocolate notes, leather, clay pots, plums, blackberry, they are all there in one-way or another, from one bottle to the next. It makes Merlot one of those wines that you connect with because of your life, your experiences, your sad days, your happy days, your memories, and your future. Its all there, and like a good hit song it hits your just right, just when you need it, just when you least expect it. Then it is there forever, a part of your heart, your mind, and who you are. We nearly missed out on that awesome wine because of one line in a stupid movie, but we are better than that in this generation. If you are lucky, that glass of Merlot is going to hit you just right.
