Wines that Rock: Chenin Blanc - Underrated, ready to blow up!

You know every October when the World Series comes around how the media seems to choose a team to be their darling? The team that everybody should love, that everybody should be rooting for because if they won it would be a dream story, something they could write about for ages. It makes all of our lives just so much easier if you all just fall in line, fall in love, and we can have a massive circle… discussion where everybody agrees with each other and no progress is made. That is how I feel about “basic” white wines, like mass produced Chardonnay and really boring takes on Sauvignon Blanc.

The heroes of the day are the unloved, under appreciated, unsung characters who destroy the media darlings and make us realize why we actually love sport in the first place. Chenin Blanc is that wine, the under appreciated white wine that destroys that basic, boring fish branded swill your sister in law and mother in law gulp down by the gallons.

Chenin Blanc is like the little sister to Sancerre, displaying so much of the same characteristics, but cries and craves to do things differently, and a little less reserved. It gets right up in your face with its citrus and pear flavors, then knocks you back with its crisp minerality. Sometimes it just wants to let its hair down, bake in the hot sun, and turn into a tanned beauty with flavors of peach, honey, and honeysuckle.

Chenin Blanc is the less reserved, wild child, bright, and spunky sister of Sancerre.

Of course, while Sancerre is setting the world alight by featuring on every restaurant wine list worth a damn, it is also becoming more and more expensive. This is where Chenin Blanc comes to the rescue, by redeeming itself with its much more valued approach. Great Chenin Blanc, especially from South Africa, will not break the bank. In fact, it should never cost you more than $20, but you can get a damn good bottle for around $10.

What more could you want in a wine? A wine that is better than your in-laws weekend swill? Check. At the same price? Check. With an exotic and sexy story? Double check. Chenin Blanc simply kicks ass by being the underdog, something you would never expect because right now nobody loves it. Whether you are quenching your thirst, pairing it with food, or lounging with your friends, Chenin Blanc covers all the bases making it a real wine that rocks.

OK wise guys, so what do we look for when we want to buy Chenin Blanc? Well, here are three things to look for when browsing the wine aisles for your weekly Chenin.

  1. Look for Loire valley Chenin Blanc, and keep an eye out for Vouvray, which is always dry but can be still or sparkling.
  2. Chenin Blanc from South Africa will always be zesty, citrusy, and easy as hell to drink.
  3. For something a little more full in the mouth look for California and Washington Chenin Blanc blended with another amazing white grape, the amazing, creamy Viognier.
