Wines that Rock: Old Vine Carignan and the masters of wine
You have probably seen "Old Vine" on many a wine label in one sense or another. There is something about old vines that seems to make us think the wine is better. The term invokes a sense of craftsmanship, of care, of having a history of making something the same way and it having stood the test of time. One old vine wine that has always made my head turn is old vine Carignan. There is just something about old vine Carignan that makes it come across as an old master with a tried and true method of making enjoyable wine.
I keep thinking of a person honing and perfecting their craft over time till they have it just right when I think of old vine Carignan. Maybe a little over zealous in their youth with design, but realizing a good product is about form and not flash. In the end it becomes perfect for its intended use, unmatched by any other, a standard, an icon. I keep thinking about Carignan in this sense. As the vines grow older they tend to produce less fruit, the grape clusters become more concentrated and the flavors of the resulting wine become intense. If Carignan in its youth is a people pleaser, then as it ages it becomes a wine that becomes devoted to happiness. Carignan is best when served in company with good friends to put a smile on their faces.
The best thing about Carignan is that it is the ultimate food wine. It has a glorious medium body with an outstanding punch of fruitiness. With the old vines these flavors become ever more concentrated, the wine gets a little smoother, almost noble. Old vine Carignan wines give a gesture of royal grandiose making them an exceptional wine to pair with your most celebrated meals. At the same time these Carignan wines are wines of heart and are well suited to go with that old family recipe that has passed down from generation to generation. You will speak as much from your soul with the wine as you do with the food.
