How to learn wine in 3 easy steps
Learning how to become a more confident wine drinker is easy. Everybody will tell you that you need to learn more about wine to enjoy it, that you need to know all the details, but that is the furthest from the truth. You don't need to learn everything about wine, but being a more confident about how you choose your wine will make you more appreciative.
Step One - Drink more!
This is the fun part. Drinking more wine will help you learn more about wine, even if you don't read up on it. You cannot enjoy wine without drinking it, and we do mean drinking not just tasting. You might not have enjoyed the first wine you tried, most wine lover don't. But every wine lover I have ever asked has only found their passion by enjoying it little by little until one wine changed everything for them. You can't force it because you will never know what wine that will be or what the moment will be either, but you can make your way through this large world by lapping it all up. You will start to notice things that you like and do not like, maybe a varietal or a region, and if you take not you can pursue other wines along those lines.
Step Two - Share your wine, and share in others' wine
Sharing is caring, but there is more to sharing than just handing out a glass of your wine, or receiving a glass of wine from somebody. You have to open yourself up to the experience of the wine; what is going on in that moment, who you are with, and what it is that you all love about the wine. You will find people take a deeper interest in the wine if you share with them why you love it even if its just a simple "I found this wine while I was on holiday in South Africa and I thought it was incredible." That sentence alone transports your friends to South Africa and opens them up to making an emotional connection to the wine. If someone is sharing their wine with you then you should open yourself up to their suggestions. It opens you up to what the wine has to offer, rather than it just being some alcoholic grape juice.
Step Three - Trust yourself
The only person who can tell you whether or not you are enjoying something is you. Why would you trust anybody else? Yes, opening yourself up to suggestion opens yourself up to new experiences, but you should never be afraid to recognize that you like something or don't like something. If you really hate that wine your host at a dinner party went on and on about for like four hours though, maybe keep it to yourself.
At the end of the day when you drink wine it should all be about the moment, who you are drinking with, what the occasion is and finally what you are drinking. These three steps are not a process but rather they go hand in hand with each other. You may find that you trust yourself more so you are confident in sharing and therefor drink more. You may drink more and find more confidence in your tastes. You may share more and end up drinking more till you discover the wine that makes you want to pursue a path. The real secret behind everything to do with wine is to just enjoy yourself. Wine will find its way to your heart somehow.
