Wines that Rock: Chablis - Not your basic Chardonnay

Good news! Chardonnay is not just for basic people, and it is certainly not a basic wine! While it remains one of the most popular wines in the world, in terms of consumption and production (it is grown everywhere in the world, in fact I had a harder time trying to figure out a country that does NOT Grow Chardonnay), it gets a bad rap as the wine of basic people, suburban housewives with nothing to do, or the elixir to countless bachelorette parties and hen nights across the glob. Yeh, except its not. Chardonnay can be really awesome when done right, and the place where they just so happen to do Chardonnay better than any place in the world is Chablis.

Seriously though, Chablis is amazing. That little corner of Burgundy that is so far north it is almost in Champagne, is renowned for its particular style of Chardonnay. In fact, everything in Chablis comes together to produce something so unique. While Chardonnay from South Africa could be reminiscent of a Chardonnay from California, or Australia, Chablis is unique and carries some characteristics you cannot find elsewhere. It is impossible to copy, impossible to even attempt to replicate. The wine really stands out thanks to everything it goes through, every influence the environment has on it, a reflection of the terroir.

When done well, Chablis is the pinnacle of white wine.

Ah shit, there's that word again. Terroir. And yes, Chablis is one of those places where terroir really matters. The ancient sea on which the Chablis region sits gives it stark minerality, salinity, and the light style of wine making that the region is devoted to gives it a sharp acidic taste. When done well, Chablis is the pinnacle of white wine.

But its more than taste, Chablis is spring and summer in a delicious bottle of thirst quenching goodness. Its summer fun, picnics, lawn parties, roof decks, and linen clothing. Afternoon weddings in the sun. Chablis is the perfect partner for sunshine, sipping it slowly, or just indulging in its deliciousness.

If you are bringing sunglasses somewhere, remember to bring Chablis!

Chablis is unique, elegant, and delightful when well crafted. It is a model of its origins, making it a wine of pride. Chablis is a perfect summer treat, an exemplary white wine that is indulgent and rewarding. So whatever you do this spring, and summer, if you think to bring sunglasses then remember to bring a bottle of Chablis.
