Wines that Rock: Pinot Meunier - Because you want it all
Have you ever been left wanting more from your run of the mill every day Pinot Noir? Not talking about the hugely expensive, stuff of legends, Burgundy shit here but just your everyday PN. Its all good, but at some point it just gets to be all the same, and when it comes to light bodied red wines there is not a whole lot out there.
Pinot Meunier step up to the plate. Its time to turn this game around and rally.
Considered to be one of the three noble grapes used to make Champagne and other traditional method sparklers the world over, Pinot Meunier has long been considered something of a sidekick, a partner, the Luigi to Mario, Robin to Batman, Kelly Rowland to Beyonce. The truth is Pinot Meunier adds so much to the Champagne blend that it is more like the unsung hero bringing fruit to the party, but lets put that aside for a second because Pinot Meunier makes an incredible red wine on its own.
When Pinot Meunier gets the opportunity to take the stage as a red wine on its own, you best be ready. This is a whole different beast. Pinot Meunier feels like it has all the fun Pinot Noir does, hangs out with all the same cool kids, but has a darker soul. Nothing scary, but they certainly have a weird obsession with Morrissey and Joy Division. There is something a little more intriguing about their character, they are different, yet totally accessible.
Pinot Meunier has all the great things Pinot Noir has, bright fruit flavors, and then adds some crazy smoky and savory flavors on top of it. It is super easy to drink, and you will feel as if you just had a massive helping of delicious spicy barbecue. Something sweet, smoky, juicy and dry all at the same time. Pinot Meunier is the wine you need to get your hands on, its that wine you desired and never really knew it existed. Give it a shot, and you will realize there is so much more to light bodied red wines.
