The ultimate glou glou wines of the summer!
Summer is all about enjoying amazing times with friends, and what could go better with friends than a damn good wine? The perfect wine for the summer is not necessarily a red, white, or even a rosé, but a wine that is going to make you happy, make you smile, and be a kickstarter for good times and conversations. These wines are intended for just such a purpose, and they are damn good too! These are our ultimate glou glou wines of the summer
Martha Stoumen - Post Flirtation Red and Post Flirtation White
A label that has two bodies sharing a warm embrace and smiling tells you that these wines are made for sharing, laughing, and having fun with someone close. They are also a great expression of modern wine in California as only Martha Stoumen can do. The red is a hazy mix of Zinfandel and Carignan, two grapes that when combined are moving the State into a whole new era in wine that is as easy going and warm hearted as its people. The Post Flirtation White is something altogether different. Its romantic and beautiful, but still serious and considered. The wine has some rich flavors and aromas and when chilled just right this is a great summer thirst quencher. Lighter on the alcohol side (just 10% ABV), this is one wine that is supremely crushable on a summer night.
Keep Wines - Cieliegiolo
Cieliegiolo is right up there for glou glou grapes. It is a light-bodied wine that packs a ton of fruit but balances it out with a beautiful aroma and a bright acidity that makes this a super refreshing little red wine. The name means little cherry in Italian, and this is like drinking a tart little cherry soda. Keep Wines managed to get their hands on some Cieliogiolo in California, and it has paid off big time! We fell in love with this wine from the get-go. There are some exuberant flavors, but also a down to earth rusticness that makes it a complete summer wine, especially for light-bodied red wine lovers. Basically for anybody who is moving on from Pinot!
Bret Brothers - Glou de Jeff
Speaking of moving on from Pinot Noir! Why not try some Gamay instead? The Glou de Jeff is a wine for friends made by friends. Bret Brothers did a favor to their friend Jean-Francois "Jeff" who could not commercialize all of his wine when he was getting his start and bottled it under the name Glou de Jeff. Years later this wine has remained a hit. Made from Gamay, the ultimate glou glou grape if you ask us, this wine is bright, full of energetic fruit, and a flavor somewhere in between cherries and cherry cola, a lot like the Cielogiolo. This is a wine to drink with friends on a porch, seamlessly transitioning from day to night and from relaxing to laughing.
Broc Cellars - Love Red
There might not be another wine on this list that hits all the notes, checks all the boxes, and shows you how awesome wine can be in 2018 when a winemaker gives a damn. Broc Cellars is a cult hit and their Love Red is a wine that exemplifies their passion for making great wine that is accessible, easy to drink, and awesome altogether. It is a California field blend of old vine Carignan, Valdiguie, and Syrah. It has a heck of a lot of character but it will prove to be an easy going everyday go to with its subtle funkiness, light to medium body, and lots of fruit. Goes well with dinner, or just drink it up by itself while curled up on the couch.
Broc Cellars - Amore Rosso
The Italian cousin to the Love Red you no doubt just read about, I just could not leave this wine off of the list. Made with Sangiovese in a lighter style this is the ultimate pizza wine, it even suggests as much on the label with its floating pies. Its fresh and light-bodied with hints of cherries, and a good dose of acidity to cut through the grease and cheese of your favorite slice. Like Pizza, this is a wine meant to be enjoyed on low key occasions with your buddies or your pals.
Marcel Lapierre - Raisins Gaulois
Marcel Lapierre makes a super drinkable, crushable Beaujolais in this wine. You kind of see a trend here that young producers in Beaujolais are just making delicious wines to drink now, drink with friends, and have fun with. But this wine shows you that "glou glou" is much much more than just being super easy to drink. The screaming flavors of bright cherries are complemented by generous acidity and an almost dusty feeling of tannins on the palette. This wine shows that for a wine to be glou glou it has to have some level of finesse and sophistication without being pompous.
Inconnu Wine - Lalalu Rose (and also the Cabernet Franc...and the Sauvignon Blanc now that you mention it)
Laura Brennan Bissell is a one-woman operation pumping out delicious wines that are meant to be drunk RIGHT NOW! She makes her wines as vins de soif, super easy drinking wines that are thirst quenching and delicious. The Inconnu wines are light in alcohol, so you'll have no problem polishing off a few with your friends in the warm weather. The Rosé is what stands out to us though. Almost Provencal in style and taste, with delicious tropical fruits and salinity (think minerality that is a little like seawater without the stank). Think sitting on a tropical beach paradise with a gentle sea breeze.
In all fairness, we could go on and list over a hundred super fresh, enjoyable, and delicious wines. That is the best and worst part of doing this job, but we soldier on for you. Remember that summer is all about having fun and enjoying the awesome weather. You'll be looking for a wine that is light and easy to drink but still has those blow-your-mind flavors and aromas that you love. You're looking for a wine you can drink without feeling like its weighing you down, so you can keep going all day with your best friends. You're looking for a wine that is glou glou, and these are just a start. A pretty fucking awesome start!
