What the "F" Is biodynamic wine?
What is biodynamic wine? Wine is not meant to be analyzed to a thousand pieces. Wine is meant to grab you by the heart and never let you go. If it does not then move on. These are the words we learned from one of France's legendary biodynamic winemakers, where the wines are influenced by the cosmos and everything around them. Biodynamic agricultural practices may seem quirky to some, and literally bullshit to others, but the practice makes for some incredible wines that are made with heart and care.
What makes a wine biodynamic?
Biodynamic wines are made from biodynamic agricultural practices. At the very core of biodynamic wine is organic farming but with an alternative spin to it. Those who practice biodynamic agriculture believe that everything in our world is interconnected and has a link to the cosmos from which it draws its energy. The growing process also follows a strict calendar with each day associated to one of the elements, ie a water day is the day you water the vines. Biodynamic winemakers also follow an interesting composting procedure that involves burying cow horns filled with a compost mixture of manure, herbs, and even crystals to draw out the energy and vibes of the cosmos.
So its just making wine with bullshit, cow horns, and crystals?
In a nutshell yes, biodynamic wine involves the use of bullshit, cow horns and crystals. It is mystic approach to growing the grapes. Many people think that biodynamic agriculture is a pseudo-scientific practice, but those who practice it show great faith and go to great lengths to make sure their crops are kept pure. You wont see any technological interference, even going so far as to plow the fields with mule, cow, or donkey drawn plows.
What biodynamic wine is not, is its not a trend, its not the hottest thing to happen in wine, and its not going away any time soon. Biodynamic winemaking is a process of making wine with minimal input with more stringent rules than your other natural wines. When you see "biodynamic" on a label you should not see "bullshit and crystals" you should see that somebody poured their soul into making this wine, and thats awesome!
Believe it or not, biodynamic winemakers do make great wine.
Everything in the farm is interrelated, and that does not stop during the winemaking process. Biodynamic winemakers go to great lengths to ensure that the wine itself is an expression of the growth process. The biodynamic winemaker goes pays careful attention to detail with craftsman like prowess tending to the delicate cosmic balance of their vineyard through careful practice in mixing herbs, dung, quartz, and cow horn to different effect makes them an artist who paints with the energy of the world that surrounds them.
Even if you don't understand it, or its just too esoteric and eccentric for you to get your head around, you have to give these winemakers some serious credit. Biodynamic winemakers do not just go out and make wine, they believe in what they do, they literally put their souls into it, breaking their backs to draw upon the cosmos to deliver us something spectacular, something unique, something that is very much of this world. Whether you believe it works or not, you should definitely be drinking it!
