What the "F" is Fruit forward?
What is fruit forward wine? Fruit forward might be the most useful descriptor you could have in your pocket when describing wine, and figuring out what wines you like versus the wines you don't.
What do people mean when they say a wine is fruit forward?
When people say a wine is fruit forward they mean the flavors and aromas are heavily concentrated by tones of fruit. The flavors and/or aromas you get upfront are to do with some sort of fruit, whatever that fruit may be. This can be the case for white wines and red wines. A fruit forward red wine might bring about stark reminders of plums or cherries, while a fruit forward white wine might have flavors of peaches, melons, or apples.
In a nutshell fruit forward means that when you smell and taste the wine you are getting hit in the face with fruit.
How is fruit forward useful to me?
Well, do you like fruit? We assume that you are drinking wine because at some point you thought the idea of fermented grape juice sounded good and delicious, so you must like at least some fruit right? Wines are packed with fruity flavors and aromas, but also other savory flavors as well. Great wines are a balance between the flavors that characterize a grape as well as where it comes from, so understanding how much fruit you like in a wine will show you what varietals of wine you might like, what wine regions you will like the most, and maybe even choose between different wines at the same vineyard.
Isn't fruit forward a little over simplistic?
Yeh, you can laugh whenever somebody says fruit forward. We do too. Of course a wine has fruity flavors right? Its made from a fruit! Even though it is a little simplistic, knowing a bit the fruity flavors in a wine and how much they come forward will tell you a lot about the wines you like and your taste for wine and for life. Fruit forward is a great starting point.
